Polish Christmas Traditions, Bless your Door on Epiphany

The front door to your house is the main entrance to your home, a threshold. You can bless all those who enter or leave by writing above the door the first two numbers of the year + C +M +B + the last two numbers of the year. E.g.

20 + C + M + B + 07

Traditionally chalk, which is blessed on the Feast of Epiphany, is used for this purpose. There are two theories for the meaning of the letters. The most popular tells us that they stand for the names of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The other says that it means "Christus mansionem benedicat" which translates as "May Christ bless this dwelling"

It is appropriate to bless your door in January - janua means "door" and the first month is the door to the new year.
