Palms blessed in churches commemorate Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. In the past, Palm Sunday was called Niedziela Kwietna (floral Sunday), because bouquets of wildflowers, willow catkins or raspberry branches were used instead of palms. It is believed that these substitutes were used in place of palms, which were difficult to come by and not always available. |
Strange but True
It is believed that swallowing a willow catkin from a branch consecrated by a priest would bring health, and palm branch placed behind a holy image until the following year would bring the inhabitants luck.
